Making water work: Infographics for the City of Ghent

Stad Gent

TL;DR
We transformed complex water and climate data into clear, visually engaging infographics to support Gent’s stakeholders in building a climate-resilient future.

In short

Water is one of the most pressing issues for climate adaptation. Ghent’s Rainwater- and Droughtplan (HWDP) tackles this challenge head-on. With goals ranging from sustainable water use to flood prevention, the plan needed clear, concise visuals to communicate its vision to stakeholders, policymakers, and developers. Supermachine stepped in to create two custom infographics that simplify complex data and strategies into actionable insights.

The challenge

How do you turn a hundred page long, technical, data-heavy document into something stakeholders can easily grasp? The infographics had to make Ghent’s water strategy accessible, actionable, and visually engaging while adhering to the city’s brand style.

The insight

When communicating sustainability plans, clarity is key. By focusing on clear hierarchies, intuitive visuals, and actionable messaging, we ensured Ghent’s stakeholders could easily understand their role in making the city climate-resilient.

The outcome

Supermachine created two dynamic infographics that distill Ghent’s water vision into digestible, visually striking formats. These tools became essential for internal communication, stakeholder presentations, and digital sharing.

In detail

Infographics should be clear, but can also be visually pleasing to grab your audience’s attention and make sure your message sticks.

Ghent’s Rainwater- and Droughtplan (HWDP) is ambitious, tackling everything from drought management to stormwater neutrality. Supermachine’s job was to break down this complex vision into two clear infographics tailored to different stakeholder needs.

The first infographic presents the core principles of stormwater neutrality. Showing how new developments can manage rainwater sustainably. Using bold visuals and a simple structure, we highlighted four pillars: reuse, local retention, peak flow control, and flood-safe building.

The second infographic zooms out to show the city-wide strategy, emphasizing nature-based solutions like green roofs, wadi systems, and the importance of balancing urban development with natural water flows. We incorporated elements like the Ladder of Lansink and the city’s water system maps, blending technical accuracy with approachable design.

Both infographics adhered to the city’s visual identity, using familiar icons and clean, readable layouts. The final products were delivered in print and digital formats, ensuring they could be used in presentations, on web pages, and for social sharing.

Supermachine’s design turned Ghent’s water plan into a conversation starter, empowering stakeholders to take tangible steps toward a greener, water-smart city.
