Get wiser with Buurtwijzer

Stad Gent

TL;DR
We turned Ghent’s educational staff into neighborhood experts with the Buurtwijzer campaign, to help them better support pupils and their families.

In short

There’s more in your neighborhood than you think. Buurtwijzer, a project by the City of Ghent, bridges the gap between local institutions and educational staff. By encouraging teachers, care coordinators, and student supervisors to explore Ghent’s neighborhoods, the campaign created stronger connections between schools, communities, and families.

We crafted a campaign that turned these explorations into something more than just a walk in the city. With engaging visuals, interactive routes, and a playful tone, Buurtwijzer made discovering the city both functional and fun.

The challenge

How do you encourage busy education staff to engage with local institutions without making it feel like a chore? The campaign needed to motivate teams to step out, discover, and connect while keeping the experience enjoyable and rewarding.

The insight

Education is about understanding the lives of pupils and their families. By discovering the institutions and services in their neighborhoods, educational staff could offer more meaningful support, creating a ripple effect of understanding and care.

The outcome

Buurtwijzer became a dynamic tool for education staff, combining themed walking routes with team building and real-world impact.

In numbers

In detail

We designed Buurtwijzer to help educational staff see their city through a fresh lens. The campaign focused on themed walking routes, each about 90 minutes long, highlighting topics like multilingualism and welfare in education. These routes turned the city into a hands-on classroom, connecting participants with key institutions that could make a difference in their work.

To bring the campaign to life, we developed a vibrant visual identity and rolled out materials across both online and offline channels. Posters, flyers, door hangers, and a home screen application captured attention in schools and public buildings, while organic social media posts and templates extended the reach digitally.

The tone was lighthearted and inviting, emphasizing the joy of discovery rather than turning it into a heavy intellectual exercise.

By helping education staff understand their neighborhoods better, we helped them offer more targeted, empathetic support to pupils and their families.
