Life Event Scans (LES) are Ghent’s innovative way to reimagine public services from the citizen’s perspective. With a focus on clarity and accessibility, these scans identify barriers and streamline interactions with government processes. We brought this complex methodology to life through an explainer video, designed to inform and inspire internal and external stakeholders to embrace this user-centered approach.
How do you explain a nuanced methodology like LES in a way that resonates? The video had to balance clarity and engagement while presenting the technical details in an accessible and visually appealing format.
Improving public services starts with understanding citizens’ real-life experiences. By highlighting LES’s focus on simplicity, inclusivity, and collaboration, we showed how this approach delivers better results for both users and the organization.
The explainer video demystified the concept of Life Event Scans, breaking down their purpose, benefits, and methods. Through animation and storytelling, we emphasized Stad Gent’s commitment to improving public services, inspiring internal teams and external partners to adopt this transformative tool.

Everyone in Ghent interacts with public services, but not all experiences are smooth. The city’s Life Event Scans tackle this head-on, analyzing government processes from the citizen’s perspective to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement.
We started by distilling the core of LES: simplicity and user-centricity. The script introduced LES as a tool that “takes the perspective of the citizen, not the view of the separate departments,” making it clear that these scans are about rethinking services to make life easier for Ghentians.
The animation brought the story to life, illustrating complex methods like customer journey mapping, in depth interviews, and form simplification in an accessible way. The visuals emphasized transformation, turning jargon-filled, confusing processes into smooth, intuitive experiences.
The video closes with a call to action: “Minder gedoe, meer Gent” (This translates to: “Less hassle, more Ghent”). This simple yet powerful message ties the LES methodology back to its ultimate goal: making the city of Ghent’s services work better for everyone.
Whether it’s improving customer journeys or breaking down silos between departments, the LES mindset empowers the city of Ghent to deliver on its promise of a citizen-first government.
