PlastiCity: Making plastic fantastic

Stad Gent

TL;DR
We made plastic recycling sexy with vibrant visuals, engaging animations and a communication strategy that brought science to life.

In short

Plastic waste might not sound exciting, but that’s where PlastiCity comes in. This University of Ghent-led initiative, supported by the European Union (Interreg), set out to revolutionize plastic recycling. But with heavy research, complex data, and deep-diving policy recommendations, they needed a way to make their work digestible and engaging.

Supermachine stepped in to translate science into something everyone: from local governments to everyday citizens, could understand and act on. We delivered vibrant animations, a mobile lab wrapped in bold graphics, and an interactive online handbook that ensured PlastiCity’s impact didn’t just live in reports but in real-world change.

The challenge

How do you make science accessible? PlastiCity’s work involved heavy research, complex data, and advanced technology. Our task was to translate that into visuals and language that resonated with non-scientists, while still keeping it accurate and engaging.

The insight

People connect with stories, not stats. By humanizing PlastiCity’s mission with relatable language and clear storytelling, we transformed the project into something inspiring and approachable.

The outcome

Supermachine turned plastic recycling into a conversation starter. From an explainer animation breaking down the project’s goals to an interactive digital handbook for policymakers, we made sure every audience could easily engage with the insights and solutions PlastiCity developed.

In numbers

In detail

People connect with stories, not stats. By humanizing PlastiCity’s mission with relatable language and clear storytelling, we transformed the project into something inspiring and approachable.

We started with the basics: a fresh, bold corporate identity that set PlastiCity apart from typical academic projects. Bright, approachable and clean, this design language carried through every element of the campaign.

To explain PlastiCity’s goals, we created a sleek animation that broke down the project step by step. Accessible language and engaging visuals ensured everyone—scientist or not—could understand why this research matters.

One of the project’s most crucial deliverables was its digital handbook. A resource designed to help policymakers and local governments implement PlastiCity’s findings in their own regions.

Instead of delivering a static PDF, we built a fully interactive, responsive online platform that made navigating best practices seamless and intuitive. Optimized for both desktop and mobile, the handbook allows users to search, filter, and explore insights based on their needs. For those who prefer print, we also included a downloadable PDF version. With an easy-to-manage backend, the platform ensures PlastiCity’s impact continues long after the project officially ends.

The mobile lab was another highlight. Acting as a traveling education hub, this lab showcased the entire plastic recycling process. We wrapped the containers in eye-catching visuals, added fun fact boards, and produced a video tour combining live footage and animations.

Beyond visuals, we also delivered a communication strategy that ensured the project stayed on everyone’s radar as it toured Europe. By combining creativity with clear messaging, we helped PlastiCity turn plastic into a symbol of sustainable innovation.
